foreign characters don't display

I receieved a foreign (Croatian) text file (.doc), but when I open it
in Microsoft Word for Mac Ver X, several of the letters appear as
underscores. Is there something to do so that they appear and print
like the foreign letter symbols they should?

The only fix is to upgrade to Word 2004. Take heart - this *will* fix
it. Alternatively, open the document in another program (under Panther,
for example, TextEdit should display the document's text correctly). m.
