form/subform caclulation timing

I have an "order entry form" can be viewed at
http://www.skiandcode.com/form.jpg. This form is for entering orders
and I will describe the process. A person can spend only so much
money (a set limit and limited by the amount of money they pay in).
If someone sends in too much money they get a refund.

As a person types in the requested products in the subform (which uses
an autolookup query) the quantity is multiplied by the price to get
the total per item. When a person enters a quantity, in the before
update event, I have code that looks up the price of the current item
and if it will push them over the amount sent in it stops the item
from being entered and highlights the quantity and throws up a message
box stating that "the item would cost too much" etc.

I then have a sum() function that totals the item totals and that is
put on the main form via direct reference in the textbox control
source. The refund field is calculated via subtracting the shiping
and handling and the calculated total (from the main form) from the
dollar amount sent in.

With all that said, Here is my real questions. When I try out the
form, the error traps or checking for going over the spendable amount
of money, the traps work. As I enter an item and finish the item, the
calculated total in the main form goes up and the refund amount goes
down. I go at what I would consider a "regular speed." But, when
the data entry people punch in the item data, (some are real fast on
10 key) the calculated total field and the refund fields do not update
until they get done entering the data. The refund field would say the
amount they sent in say $40, and it would go to 0 only when they get
done entering the items. Which at times has allowed the entering of
items that would push them over their spendable amount.

This can be a real problem because I need their entry speed but need
access 2000 to keep up with the error checking.
