Format column to currency?

Is there a way to configure a table column so that when I type numeric
data into any of its cells it is automatically converted to a
'currency' type? In other words, it inserts a '$' in front, and say if
I type in '27' it comes out '$27.00'? Thank you.

In Word, this can only be done by the use of formfields, or by inserting an
Excel sheet into the document.
