Format menu missing items

In Microsoft Word for Mac, 2001, I cannot find what a handbook directs me
to find in the format menu. Specifically, there is no command for "column"
where I could produce a column dialog box. Nor is there a command to
open the tabs dialog box.

I have reinstalled the software and they still do not appear. Manual on Office
X for Mac tells me they should be there. I have a vague memory they were
there before (don't use all that often but really need now.)

thanks.

Not sure if this is the same in Word for Mac as Word for PC, but try:
right-click any toolbar. Select Customise. Right-Click the Format menu.
Select Reset.

These settings are saved in normal.dot whiich is left untouched when you
reinstall the software; so reinstalling won't help.

Thanks. Not the same (no right/left click mouse) but found the customize
command in view---toolbars---customize. However...

When the customize dialog box opens, even though it says you can drag
from the list of commands to either "toolbar or menu" the commands can
only be dragged to a toolbar. How would someone drag something to the
permanent menu?

Still need columns and tabs (and anything else which might be missing.
Looking at previous posts in this forum, saw someone make suggestion
concerning normal.dot. Tried the find command on my hard drive and do
not find that either.

Anything or anyone else?

You drag to the menu bar, hover and wait for the menu to open, then drop the
item on the menu where you want it.

This suggestion was helpful as it led me to the right area. Found customize
in view....toolbar...customize. Notice that when customize is opend, creates
a duplicate of the menu immediately below the menu (all menu headings the
same.)

Now, I can drag things from the command list in the customize dialog box
to this sub-menu bar. Was initially able to successfully retreive "Tab..."
command into the menu bar. When I selected "Tab..." from the menu, I got a
tab dialog box. Leaving Word environment promplty removed that option.

There is no similar choice in that customize dialog box for "Column..."
which I can drag to this sub-menu and get it back.

Still need some help, please.
