Format "More Colors"

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.6)
Word for Mac 2004 (11.5.3)
When I go to Format, Borders and Shading, Colors – as long as I use the standard colors, I have no problem. When I 'arrow down' to "More Colors" the screen locks and I then have to go to Word, Hide Word, then go to Word on the Dock – at this time the color choice pops up and I can change to the many other colors. It is hiding someplace, but I don't know where. Does the same thing when I use "Format Palette.

Oh dear.... I wonder if we are going to be able to solve that one...

Word 2004 was built around the old version of the Quartz colour system.
It's limited to (I think...) 256 colours (eight-bit colour).

If you expose it to the latest version which will do 32-bit colour, it will
be somewhat unhappy.

Is this one document, or every document? If it's only one document, it's a
corrupt document. Try saving it as a web page then bring it back to
document format.

If it's every document, you could try re-running the latest updates, first
for Mac OS 10, and then for Microsoft Office 2004. This kind of problem can
come from incompatible file versions.

Hope some of this helps

I'm thinking it's a local issue - I'm not seeing that here on either Tiger
or Leopard & I have both '04 & '08 on each system. Have jockeyed both .doc &
..docx back & forth between the two versions but can't repro... No matter
what - even with selection of "More Colors" in *any* location (Font Color,
Fill Color, etc.) the Color Picker launches & behaves as expected.

Just as a guess: is it possibly a case of a file with "new" colors saved out
of '08 as a .doc then opened in '04 where this occurs? Also, if it is all
documents, try logging in while holding Shift as well as launching Word
while holding Shift & see if the problem persists in either case.

Additional to John's suggestions I'd think a permissions repair couldn't
hurt :) Include that after any updating you do.

Cyber Taz and John McGhie: Thanks for your prompt reply. I am totally amazed at this web site and your knowledge and willingness to assist.
Regarding the above problem - and after many hours, something in a completely unrelated post (I subscribed) clicked and I used the fn + F8 key. There was the "color palette" in one of the four "Expose" blocks". So how it gets there is beyond me, but at least I know how to retrieve it!
Again, thank you.
