Format Painter fails to function

Format Painter fails to work when scrolling down to the next page ONLY WHEN a
page number field is inserted in the footer.

I know that this solution

says to insert the page numbers in a different way but it doesn't work for
me.

Surely Microsoft is aware of the problem and has a solution by now, right?

If you use the keyboard shortcuts, do they work properly?

Yes, Control+Shift+C/V work fine, but I prefer not to be forced to use that
option. Is there no real fix to this bug that would allow me to properly use
both page numbers and the Format Painter button?

Which version of Word are you using? I haven't been able to reproduce the
issue you described, but on the other hand I can still reproduce the issue
described in this KB article (using Word 2007):

It does seem as if the only reliable method is to make use of the keyboard
shortcuts, which seems more flexible anyway.
