Format/Symbol shuts down Word

I run Microsoft Word 2002 on Windows XP Home Edition.
Recently every time I go to Format and click on Symbol,
Word competely shuts down saying there has been an
application error. What can I do to correct this?

Ordinarily Symbol is on the Insert menu, but if you're having problems with
Insert | Symbol or Format | Font, or with the Print, Style, Paragraph, or
Page Setup dialogs, the problem is often a damaged or missing printer
driver. Try deleting and reinstalling your printer.
