Formating a page with photos in Word 2000

I tell you Word can drive a person crazy. I have written a
book of 375 pages which I have done as a single file to
ease indexing. I print it for my college classes at
Kinkos. This edition for spring 2004 turned out to be a
disaster. Diagrams or photos are often down over the
footnotes. They do not appear that way in Print Layout but
do in preview and print taht way. What causes Print Layout
and Preview not to agree? Also the page numbers do not
seem accurate. When I hit goto page 310, I might end up at
anyplace from page 300-315. This throws off the print
current page too. So I feel I have little control over my
document. I printed out 75 copes of my book for class and
it had numerous unanticipated errors. Should I be using a
newer version of Word? I hate to migrate to Publisher
since that is just another software to learn. BTW, I have
published books before witrh word but adding photos and
diagrams seems to really through off teh program. HELP!

Since you mention that you have an index, one caveat would be to make sure
you have nonprinting characters (including Hidden text) hidden in Print
Layout view sinc XE fields are formatted as Hidden text. If you have Hidden
text displayed, that would account for a difference between Print Layout
view and Print Preview (since the XE fields take up considerable space).

I am confused. Yes there is a lot of hidden text:indices,
bookmarks, cross references, etc. However why should print
layout and printpreview give conflicting information. A
photo may look fine in print layout but in print preview
it is down overlapping the footnotes. Also when I check by
trying to print just that page, print current page really
does not work since it prints a page a couple before or
after. Word should be able to take hidden text into
consideration when doingh either print layout or print
preview. I feel I have lost all control of the word
processer. Word is VERY hostile to including photos or
drawings, esp. when it is a 367 page book. Do any later
versions of Word work better?

If the Hidden text is hidden, then Print Layout view and Print Preview
should be the same, but if Hidden text is displayed, they won't be. I don't
really see any way around this.
