Formating changes randomly when saving file

I am having a formating problem with Word 2002 that I just can't
figure out and would appreciate any suggestions. I have a 50 page
document with page numbers and a lot of graphics (jpg format). The
document was formated exactly as I wanted it, so I saved the file and
printed it. It printed out correctly - all the pictures were in
exactly the right place. I even saved a backup copy of the file. I
made NO changes - I just saved and printed and everything looked
great.

When I open the file again on the same computer, same printer, same
everything - the formating has changed. Some of the pictures have
randomly moved down on a page, or to to next page or out into the
margins. Even some of the text has shifted so what was on one page
before has move up or down or to different page.

This document printed perfectly. I don't understand how just saving
the document could have messed up the formating. Is this a bug in the
program, or something I'm doing wrong? I have spent hours on this and
its driving me crazy. HELP PLEASE!

Hi R.,

When I see such major *layout* changes, involving pictures, the first
question I have is: did you insert pictures into text boxes, then apply
text flow (wrap) formatting to them? This will screw up the position
when the document is re-opened - every time.

A friend of mine helped me figure out what was happening. I didn't
use text boxes, I just inserted jpg graphics using the "insert,
picture, from file" menu. I then printed the document in color to my
HP inkjet printer. It printed perfectly, so I saved it.

I wanted to print another copy (using the same printer and computer),
but I wanted to save my color cartidge, so I selected print in black &
white. This is where it gets wierd. Just selecting black and white
totally messed up the formating as mentioned in my original eamil.
When I opt to print in color - the formating is fine. When I select
black and white printing, the formating changes. I made NO OTHER
changes and am using a standard arial 12 pt font, so I am clueless as
to why this happens. This makes no sense to me. Does anyone out
there have an explanation for why just choosing to print in B&W would
affect formating? Thanks for any info.

Hi R.,

I'd say the problem probably lies in the printer driver. But you might
want to ask this in the word.printing.fonts group, where you're more
likely to find people who specialize in printing questions.
