I am trying to define a specific sub-heading in a business document. I want the paragraph sub-heading to appear in the margins next to its corresponding paragraph and I want the text to wrap if the title is too long. I can get the sub-head to be in the margin by adjusting the indentation to a negative # but I can't figure out how to get the text to wrap (i.e,. stay in the margin)

Word does not do "Side Heads" natively :)

Suzanne's technique works perfectly, but it's far too much work (cost,
time!) for a long document :)

You have to spend quite a bit of time fiddling to get things to line up.

The other technique is a two-cell table with hidden borders. You can put
the side-head in the left cell. Again: good for short documents (and
simple!) but too much fiddling for a long document.

You can obtain a "similar" appearance by setting a wide right margin on the
paragraph style for your side heads. This does not generate a true
side-head, but it can confine the text to the left margin where you want it.
The following text will still appear below the paragraph, but the text of
the side head will be in the margin. If you ad an over-line or some shading
or other graphical device, it can look quite effective. And it's zero extra
work, because the style does it automatically for each side-head.

Personally, I simply point out to the commissioning author that such a
layout reduces the readability of the document and substantially increases
the printing and maintenance costs; and does not lend itself to electronic
publishing. If they wish, I will compute the actual costs so they may
include the estimate in their business justification to their boss. I will
proceed if their boss approves the extra cost :)

If they still want it, you just have to kill them... Don't forget to hide
the bodies somewhere where the smell will not attract attention...

Hope this helps

Thanks John... I am going to present your argument to the publishing author! And, if that doesn't work, I may just go that next step!!!! Cheers
