Formatting cells in word tables

Can you format cells in word tables like you can Excel. I want format the
cells to recognize dates. The from there make formulas

No, the contents of Word tables are just text and don't recognize any
special formats.

If you need that function, you can embed a part of an Excel worksheet in
your Word document.
