Formatting gone crazy

Suddenly the formatting in a long-established spreadsheet I have has gone
crazy. Where text is too large fort a box and would normally flow over into
the empty box to the right, it no longer does so. The text is still there,
but it is truncated.

Also, the text in some cells, which should be centered horizontally and
vertically, is now in the bottom right of the cell, even though the settings
are correct.

Any suggestions?

The text is still there, but it is truncated.

Suggests there is something in the cell following - perhaps a space ?
Try deleting the contents of the "blank" cells

The first thing I tried was deleting any contents in the adjacent cell. The
second thing I tried was deleting all formatting from the adjacent cell.

No luck.
