formatting in Word applies formatting to the entire document

I use Word 2002 (XP). Ever since I installed it,
everytime I format something, say center a word, the
entire document is centered. If I use the undo control,
it fixes the document the way it should have been in the
first place.

Any ideas? Thank you, Ted
