Formatting Issues

I have encountered a very annoying problem in Word 2002.
When I select a word, sentence, or paragraph and change
the formatting (i.e. from normal to bold), my whole
document changes to the formatting I've chosen for that
word, sentence, or paragraph! When I use "CTRL Z", it
undoes everything but the selected item(s). Then when I
proceed with further formatting changes, the same occurs.
Any ideas?
