The formatting palette disappears into the screen when I click on the "A" on
tool bar. How do I get it to stay?

Your post suggests that you may be on a Macintosh computer... If so the "A"
button toggles the Formatting Palette On/Off, so if you want the Palette to
stay On just don't click the button
If that isn't an accurate guess, I
think we need a better description of what you mean - and include what
version of Word you're using.
