formatting REF fields

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I am utilizing REF fields to duplicate a person's name in multiple locations within a document. The first time the name appears, it must be in allcaps and in bold. All other instances of the name may be unbolded and normally capitalized. Using switches, I can get the name to appear properly capitalized, but I cannot find a way to prevent the REF fields from appearing in bold. I've already tried the "preserve formatting" option both on and off. Also, I'm using Word 2008 for Mac, not 2004.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Have you tried creating Character Styles & using them to format the Fields?

Hi LawBard,

You can control the bolding by adding a Charformat switch to the field. See Word's help files for details.

Macropod,

Thanks for the tip. I used \* Charformat, and once I realized I should put this switch AFTER \* caps, it worked like a charm. Thanks!

By the way, you might not want to refer people to the Word help file for Mac 2008 Word, as it is AWFUL. No mention of switches at all that I can find other than the most generic instructions re: the contents of the insert field screen.....

Hi LawBard,

I don't use Macs myself, so I'm not familiar with Word's Help file in that environment. Mind you, the Help file in the PC
environment isn't exactly brilliant, either.

Hi MacroPod:

He's right. They dropped the Item-level help for fields from Mac Word 2008.

The one-line bubble help text is still there in the Insert>Field dialog.
But the help item for each field has been removed, so there is no
documentation of the parameters and switches.

I am afraid someone wasn't thinking very well. Remind me to put that on the
list for the meeting I have with them at the end of the month...

Cheers

Hi John,

I would have expected the Mac Help files to be essentially the same as those on the PC. Ho hum.

That is a reasonable expectation in Word 2004 -- the 2004 Help is largely a
cut-down of the 2003 help.

Sadly, they threw all of that out for 2008 and wrote their own (largely
because the Help Engine in OS X is nothing like the HTML Help engine in
Windows: you can't use the same source files).

As a result, the 2008 Help suffers from Reducto ad Absurdia, and is very
much a work in progress. If the user does not know to allow the help system
to work online, there's almost no help available at all.

Cheers
