Formatting TOCs

The Microsoft template, MANUAL.DOT, creates a TOC based on three Heading
styles, Heading 1, Heading 2 and Heading 3. When I build the TOC, all three
heading types are left-justified and align on the left margin. The type
style implies that each type is subordinate to the one above as in an
outline.

How do I indent each type so that each lower level heading is indented from
its parent level?

Modify the definitions of the TOC1, TOC2, and TOC3 styles to include
the appropriate indents.

The only place I can find the definitions for TOC1, TOC2, and TOC3, etc. is
in the Normal style. If I change the indent for any one of them, the indent
is applied to the entire TOC not the individual ones.

The list of available styles shows only TOC Base whose Modify menu I don't
understand how to use.

In the Format | Style dialog, you will find all styles listed, including TOC
1 through TOC 9. You can also modify TOC styles through the Table of
Contents dialog (click on Modify...).

Please reread my note. TOC 1-9 do not show in the dialog for documents based
on the MANUAL.DOT template.

I did some rummaging around and found that if I customize the dialog from
the Show window I can add the TOCs to the dialog list.

I have just created a document based on Manual.dot. Not only do I see all
the TOC styles listed in Format | Style, but when I click on the existing
TOC, I see the appropriate TOC level in the Style dropdown on the Formatting
toolbar. If I choose Insert | Reference | Index and Tables and choose Table
of Contents, then click Modify..., I see all nine TOC styles listed. I'm not
sure in which dialog you say you are not seeing the styles.
