Is there a way to have the shaded form field area in a
form reflect its character width? In order words if I
set the option to have the form be 65 characters, can I
somehow set the shading to be about that width to
visually inform a user what can be entered.

You can add that many hard-space characters (Ctrl+Shift+space) to the
default text field in the formfield's Properties dialog.

As the user types the first character into the field, the default text will
be replaced and the field will collapse to the length of whatever the user
enters.

If you need to maintain the relative positions of other fields on the same
line, use a (possibly borderless) table with fixed cell sizes.
