Formula that display < >

Is there any way to write a formula that will result in the displaying being
the actual symbols < >.
I would like to have 9 years average, then in the 10 year if that is greater
than the average a > symbol would be in that cell, if less than a < symbol
would appear in the cell.
Hope this makes sense.
