formulas involving a drop down list

I'm trying to figure out how I can use a formula that is involving two
variable. One variable is from a dropdown list, and so constantly changes.

If this is a data validation dropdown list then just reference the cell.
Example: if the data valdation drop down is in cell a1, then in a2 = a1+4

If this is a combo box dropdown, see the properties for linked cell. Enter
into the linked cell as an example A1 and then reference it. eg a1+4
