Formulas not calculating

B

This is a problem that has occurred on and off for me and I am not sure
why.

Sometimes when I enter a formula into a cell, the formula shows up as
the text instead of the anticipated answer.

For example, if I have 9 in cell A1 and I type =A1+10 into cell B1, B1
will show =A1+10 as the answer instead of 19.

Any ideas why it sometimes works this way?

Thanks.

In these cases, your cell was formatted as text before you entered the formula. Formatting afterwards doesn't help.
Format the cell as general or Number and RE-ENTER the formula (F2, ENTER)
