Formulas Remain Visible

I created a document that used several formulas to calculate total hours
based on certain codes entered. The document was protected and saved and
then it was suggested to me that I could use absolute references instead
of relative references in the formulas. When I try to enter ANY sort of
formula now where the old ones were, the formulas remain visible in the
cell. There are no leading spaces or anything wrong w/ the formula. Even
trying to replace them with very basic formulas, they still remain
visible. Anyone know what's going on or have any suggestions?
thanks

If I understand your description, the cells may have been formatted to
"text". Try to see it from the "Format" menu - "Cells..." option. If is set
to "text", change it to some proper "Time" setting and try modifying the
formula again afterwards.
