Forwarded message is mis-sent to previous (wrong) email address

I misaddressed an email, which bounced back to me with an
error message.

Then I forwarded the misaddressed email to the correct
email address (I wanted the recipient to know that I had
tried to send it promptly). This bounced back again with
an error message referring to the previous, wrong email
address, even though that was NOT what I put in the "To:"
field this time.

This has happened before.

What is going on? How can the email server even detect
what was in the old "To:" field? Isn't it just the address
that IS in the current "To:" field that counts?

I have now tried three times to correct this.

Mystified and very frustrated,
S

Yikes - I think I see what I did wrong. I had corrected
the email address in the Display line in my Contacts, but
hadn't noticed that the bad email address was still in the
actual email address field. I never saw the actual address
that Outlook used - just the Display As address in the To:
field.

Live and learn,
S
