Forwarding contacts as VCF files

Hi,

Is there a limit on the length of fields (eg e-mail addresses) when forwarding contacts as vcf cards? Is this a file limitation or Entourage issue?

I've forwarded a number of contacts where the e-mail address has been cropped when opened by the recipient.

Thanks,

there's no limit that I am aware of.

do you know what mail clients your recipients were using when they rec'd
truncated vcfs? can you create a vcf that will be truncated in this way
and send it over to me to test?

If we can find a reproducible case, there's a fair chance of getting it
fixed, since data loss bugs get the highest priority!

Hi,

The recipient client is Outlook 2003. just created a fairly simple vcard which was truncated. Just e-mailed it to the officeformac.com address.

cheers,

Try zipping the file and see if that fixes the problem.

Interesting suggestion, but the card is 270B - doesn't really seem excessive!
Also, I'm using the 'Forward as Vcard' function from the contacts menu within Entourage. I can't see an option to zip it. How is this done?

In the Finder, select the file and in the contextual menu select compress.

Ok, I saved the Vcard to the desktop, zipped it and attached it to an e-mail.

interesting, the e-mail address in the card wasn't truncated, but a space was inserted in the address, where it had originally been truncated.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll forward this on for more testing.

this sounds like a line-wrapping issue. I will do some testing and
report back in a coupe of days.

I'm having the exact same problem. VCF cards that are forwarded from Entourage to Outlook users are being truncated. Specifically, the e-mail address is always truncated after 21 characters (as is the e-mail address portion of the Display As field). And the text in the Address field is truncated as well, although I don't see a pattern yet. Random slashes are appearing in the text of some fields, too.

These cards were imported into Entourage from Outlook, incidentally. They look fine in Entourage, but Outlook recipients see truncated fields.

Did you try compressing them?

At what point would the compression take place--when they were imported into Entourage, now (as they sit in Entourage), or as they are being forwarded?

You can compress the file/folder in the Finder. Select the file and use
contextual menu to select "compress." Entourage will also automatically
compress some items before sending, but I just tested and sending vcf files
did not automatically compress.
