FP 03 - Backward Compatable?

A

Auerbach

A year or so I created a simple theme-based site for a friend using
Frontpage XP. She also has FP XP installed on her computer, and does minor
updates from time to time. I recently upgraded to FP 2003, deleting my older
program.

If I make minor or major changes to the CONTENT of the site (that is, adding
or moving a page, updating text on a page, etc.) with FP 03, but I don't
change the theme -- will we both continue to be able to access the site? Or
does FP 03 make "behind the scenes" changes that will make it difficult or
impossible for her to make changes of her own?

What happens of I publish a copy of the site to my hard drive and then
republish it to another server? Will this process make changes that will
effectively shut her out of the site?

There should be no problems as long as you do not use any features that are
exclusive to FP 2003.

I have had problems with its compatibility to FP2K.
The themes throughout the site got sooooo screwed up that
its workaround solution was to use NO THEME then manually
place a Background pix on EACH of its 400 pages.
See my earlier postings and to this date it is still not
resolved.

George,

Your earlier posts have scrolled off my news server. When your themes got
fried, did you attempt to use DWTs rather than manually editing each of 400
pages? Just curious (and sympathetic!)

Thanks, Stefan, but the situation here is that we DON'T want to update the
themes. Our goal is to allow one user to maintain the site using FP XP,
while I use FP 03 -- hopefully, without unknowingly making changes that
preclude my friend from using her older copy of Frontpage on the site.

(For anyone else reading this post, Stefan's tutorial on updating themes is
incredibly helpful.)

Upgrading the theme as a custom theme will make it available to both users in both versions
(except the theme must be applied using CSS in both versions)

PS
The DWT is not backward compatible
