FP 2003 "Error Reading File"

RE: FrontPage 2003 SP-1

When I try opening files in a web I have been successfully
working one, I am now getting an "Error Reading File"
message with all .htm files I am trying to open in the FP
editor.

I originally started to see this error message with only
an occasional file here and there. I re-created them and
fixed the issue, so I thought. Now it is happening with
all files in the web.

I CAN:
1. View the files in the browser just fine????
2. Open other webs and see files just fine.

I have tried the following without fixing the problem:
1. Opening files on another computer.
2. Moving files to another location to eliminating a
potential disk issue.
3. Opening the files in FrontPage 2002.
4. Applied all latest service packs
5. Run a Detect & Repair on FP

What gives - is this bug, FP 2003 corrupting it's own
files?

The way it looks now is I have to start ALL over from
scratch. If that is true, that really sucks big
time!!! ...Dreamweaver here I come!

Thanks - Jody

UPDATE: No wonder FP can't open the files - ALL files have
a file size of 18,4xx KB

What the heck caused that??? These files are really small
with mostly text and a few graphics.

YIKES!

Running NAV Internet Security so I am fairly certian I do
not have a virus.

UPDATE #2 - Opening the .htm files in notepad all that
extra file size is BLANK SPACE. I deleted it all in all
files and I am now able to opene my files.

I do have to do slight re-formating but at least I do not
have to re-create the entire site.

WHAT THE HECK IT GOING ON WITH THIS?

Any ideas on this???

Thanks - Jody

I am having the same exact problem...but only with my main page..I am trying to do the notepad thing you suggested. Do you think its because the file size of the page is too big ??

First try a repair on FP (Help - Detect and Repair)
- then see 1& 2 below
Then in Tools Page Options Code Formatting and select Reset
Try Opening your page in Code/Html View and right click to Reformat Html to see if it removes all the extra line breaks

Note:
FP has a html line restriction of ~ 32K
- if some how your pages (due to the lien breaks) exceed that # of lines it may be causing the failure to open the pages

PS
I have SP1 installed and do not see that problem occurring

What I am further discovering is that each time I save
page files they get progressively larger and larger adding
thousands and thousands of blank lines in the code only
between each individual hover button code sections as
shown below:

<applet code="fphover.class" codebase="./" width="127"
height="84">
This is the location in the code that is ALWAYS the place
where space is added for every button.
<param name="color" value="#000080">

(foot note: Despite the new interactive button
functionality, help says you can use hover buttons if you
paste in the code since it is no longer a part of the Web
Components. I would be happy to switch to interactive
buttons but there doesn't seem to be the same flexibility
that hover buttons provide.)

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I already did a "Detect
and Repair" and "Applied SP1".

I tried the suggestion of Resetting the Code Formatting
and applying "Reformatting HTML" in the page - RESULT -
More lines were added increasing the space. My file size
went from 14k to 18 just from this operation.

In one case I tried a find and replace for empty lines and
I removed over 60,000 lines. This did not help because I
was using a dwt template. The operation reported not
being able to function because of the un-editable space.

So, despite the fact that I can manually reduce file size,
every time I need to edit a file this continually re-
occurs consistently. This is extremely frustrating and
time consuming.

HELP!!!
Thanks - Jody

FYI...heres what worked. If your affected page is say "index.htm" pull it up
in your browser and copy the entire page. and then paste its contents onto a
new page called indexbackup.htm page. delete "index.htm". Open
"indexbackup.htm" an rename it to "index.htm"..it gets rid of all the disk
space that all the blank spaces take up.
create a new page called "index.htm" . Delete the "index.htm" file
