FP 2003 occasionally reinstalls itself

Why does FP 2003 occasionally want to reinstall itself? I've observed this
behavior on two occasions. I allowed it to reinstall itself and all is
then well. Seems like sort of creepy behavior to me. -Ian

It decides it's damaged, or you tried to use a feature
that you didn't orignally install.

Thanks for the reply Jim. I'm puzzled though as to why it would decide that
it's damaged. (a complete install was done)

I do know that many MS office products don't like to be put in a separate
partition. I put all of my programs in a program only partition on my hard
drive.

Could it be that if it can't start from the "C:" drive that it interprets
this as "damaged"?

I've also noticed that when I want to work on a web site and then exit the
site that is loaded, it loses the location of the my other webs in my data
partition. Takes me back to some obscure location back on the C: drive.
Extremely annoying when I've got a dozen changes to make on several web
sites.

Perhaps this is a feature.

I don't use FP extensions and use WS_FTP to move files to different web
sites. I don't think that should make a difference though.

Any further thoughts on this?

No, using another drive should be OK.

Perhaps this is a feature.

Do you mean the locations in the MRU (Most Recently Used) list on the
File menu, or the default location when you choose Open Site from the
File menu?

If you mean the MRU list, this might indicate that you have some sort
of Registry security in effect that's stopping FrontPage from saving
the MRU list. The same security might be preventing other changes that
FP later detects as damage.

If you mean the default location when you choose Open Site, and it
comes up C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents, this is a
system default.

To work around this:

1. Choose Open Site from the File menu.
2. Position to the folder you really want.
3. Select it.
4. Open Tools on the Open Site toolbar, and choose Add To "My
Places".
This will add your preferred location to the My Places bar at the
left of the dialog box.
5. Locate the newly saved location in the My Places Bar, then
right-click
it and choose Move Up. Repeat until it's always visible.
I don't use FP extensions and use WS_FTP to move files to different web
sites. I don't think that should make a difference though.

You're always loggong into Windows with the same username, right?

If you log inwith a different username, FrontPage will rerun setup
to establish settings and preferences for that user.

I have two machines, one has the MRU problem and the other I've just fixed
using your "work around" listed below. Thanks, hope I'm the only one with
these two odd problems with FP2003.

Thanks, I've used TweakUI for so many years (win2k systems) that I didn't
even think about looking at the setting there.
