FP extensions

Is there a document somewhere that talks about the pros and cons of using
the FP extensions? I use FP 2003 for my personal website
(www.adahighlander.com). It is hosted by DreamHost.com. They support the
extensions but they have a big notice on the Enable FP Extensions page that
says my website will not accessible via FTP if I enable them. They also say
it will take several days for the change to ripple through the network since
my IP address will have to change.

Any helpful thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

Also the FP extensions allow you to work directly on the live/remote site from within FP.

Thanks for the link. I just read a note in the
microsoft.public.frontpage.client forum that said the extensions are being
discontinued so maybe my question became moot. Heard anything about this?

They are being discontinued and there is no longer any support from MS.
However, that doesn't mean that hosts will necessarily discontinue using
them.

Support for the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions running on Windows Server
2003 has not been discontinued, and will not be discontinued for at least 3
years. They will be supported as long as Windows Server 2003 is supported,
and will continue to be updated with security patches, etc. if needed.

I am having a *very* tough problem with FP and my web host. They broke the
extensions and now this is what they say (in pidgin English).
======================
Dear Customer,

The FPE will not work for your web site and the reason is that your be site
is too big, too many files you have. The FPE are breaking over and over
again. In order to prevent this from being happening only you can fix this
on your end. Here is the limit of the web site made with FPE:

you have ~72,000 files (now they are ~55,000). FPE is for site not bigger
than 100 MBytes and with no more than 1000 files. FPE can't be installed
normally here, I strongly recommend - either to leave 1000 files or use FTP.
However they are - re-installed again.

So FP is only for 'toy' sites according to my web host. Your decision.

The best option, which has been suggested already to you, is to break the site in smaller subwebs /
subsites based on content.

Subwebs / Subsites are completely independent webs / sites under FP root web, and allows you to open
and/or publish each independent of each other as well as the root web.

If the bulk of your site is image, sound files, etc. these would good to place into a separate
folder (not the images folder) and then convert the folder to a subweb / subsite.

I can do that (or at least try to do it) but is there a limit on FP? If so
what is it?
