FP will not start any longer

I've been using FP since about 1999. I purchased FP 98, updated to 2000,
then to 2002. About a year ago I installed Office XP with FrontPage.
Everything has always been fine. I'm reloading my computer and tried to
install FrontPage again from the Office XP cd. It couldn't find a previous
version, so it stopped me. I can't find my FP 2000 cd, so I loaded FP 98,
then updated to 2002. Everything seems to have loaded fine. When I try to
start FP, I get the "Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Sorry for the inconvenience" error. I'm wondering if somewhere along the
line a FP Product Key has been saved and I'm having issues with reloading.
My software is not a copy. I have the original boxes, cds and cd cases
showing Product Key codes. Any suggestions? I removed the software and
cleared out all the FrontPage entries I could fine in the Registery, then
reloaded, but got the same result. Thanks for any help. Chris

Kathleen Anderson [MVP - FrontPage]

Find and delete the cmdui.prf file for FrontPage - this is the file that
stores your customizations and preferences for the FrontPage Menu and it
will get rebuilt, using the defaults, the next time you start FrontPage.

Thanks Kathleen. I found the file you mentioned in the registry and deleted
it. In addition, I removed Front Page and searched/deleted every where I
could find FrontPage files, including the registry and my main hard drive. I
reloaded the software again, but with the same results as I listed below.
Any other suggestions? Chris

The cmdui.prf file is in the folder (enter below in Windows Explorer Address bar)
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FrontPage\State


Uninstall (Control panel Add / Remove Programs) the FP 98 version you installed, then in same place reinstall or repair FP 2002
- if asked for a qualifying product during install just insert the FP 98 CD

The file Kathleen mentioned, cmdui.prf, is not in the registry (though it
may be referenced there). Find it using Windows Explorer - it is a hidden,
system file.
If it exists, FrontPage will use it. If it is deleted, FP will create it,
in a non-corrupted form.
