FP2000 and stored passwords

S

Steve Easton

On your local machine??
In the web itself. Using windows explorer browse to the _vti_pvt folder and look for a file named
service.pwd and open it with notepad.
Make sure you copy the file someplace as a backup first before you edit it though. ***just in
case***

On the local station that is being used to edit the remote website.
I don't the file you refer to is held locally?

Brett...

I'm still looking for an answer to this.
When a remote site is being accessed for editing, FrontPage 2003 asks you if
you would like to remember the password for the remote site.
If you tick the remember password box, the details are stored (along with
the user log on details) locally.

I wish to remove the logon and password details, so that I can edit the
website as a different user (with different permissions).
How can I do this?
As soon as I enter the URL from Open site, the site is opened directly using
the previously cached user datails.

See http://makeashorterlink.com/?S50D15769 ?

You would have to delete the all references to the web site each time or choose not save the login
info, as you can only have one reference with stored login info.

So how do I "delete the references to the web"? I've already deleted the
relevant folder in My Webs. It doesn't make any difference, I still don't
get prompted for a username and password. All I want to know is where the
log-in details are stored.
Have you read...
See http://makeashorterlink.com/?S50D15769 ?
The poster explains the problem perfectly.

I can't believe that finding a solution to this seemingly simple problem is
proving to be so difficult.

With FP closed, you need to delete the folder under My Network Places, not under My Webs. You may
also have to search the registry for the specific domain and also delete the login info.

This is the same solution provided by Jack Brewster to the other poster.

Apologies, I meant My Network places and that did not resolve the problem as
Ren Butler said in the thread below.
However the information about deleting from the registry IS new (ie not
posted below) so I'll give that a try.

Do you have the folder in the registry where the logon details and password
are stored?

Brett,

Sorry, it seems with all of the recent security updates that info is not longer stored in the
registry, and this is prior to Window XP SP2 being installed.

Beside deleting the site in my Network Places, if it still appears in the File Menu | Open Web /
Site dialog, you also need to delete it there as well, by right clicking and selecting delete.

Brett,

If that doesn't work, then you can try one of the following:

If the site is hosted on a static IP account, create the additional login using the IP address
instead of the domain name

or

Use a second PC with FP to access the site with this additional login.

I can't log in using an IP address as the server hosts multiple webs.
Option 2 doesn't solve the problem on my own PC!
Surely someone must know where FP keeps it's password and log-in details!

I don't recommend the following, but ...

You can in IE | Internet Properties | Content | Auto Complete | clear passwords.

Is the web site listed in IE's trusted sites?
In IE, Tools->Internet Options, Security tag. Click Trusted Sites, click
Sites button

If so, either remove it, or change the settings (under custom level on
security tag) to prompt for Userid and Password.

Passwords used by FrontPage are stored by IE, I do not know where.

B

Brett...

Can anyone help me out here?
Do MVPs have access to MS technical support?
Surely this information can't be that difficult to get hold of?

It's not that simple.
Depending upon the OS they could be stored in a .dll or .exe file which you can't edit to remove
them.

Windows 95 had a utility named pwedit.exe that you could run and remove passwords, but it doesn't
run on any other OS. I just tried it on 2K Pro and it wasn't happy.

Internet related passwords are "normally" managed by the Client for Microsoft Networks service which
you'll find in Network Neighborhood "Properties."

You can try removing it, rebooting and then reinstalling it. But, be prepared to have to re-enter
all of your user names and passwords.

( if it removes them that is )
