FP2000 and Win XP Pro

B

Bazil

Hello

I author a website using FP2000 on my local harddrive and
publish to an ISP.

I recently moved the disk based website from an old Win
98 machine to an XP Pro machine. (I just copied the files
from one directory to another using the LAN and windows
explorer)

I would like to be able to edit the disk based website
from the XP machine and from the Win 98 machine over the
LAN.

When I try to open the website from the Win 98 machine it
says "server timed out".

When I look at the website on the XP machine it says that
a server is not running and I cannot set any security
permissions as they are greyed out.

In Admin Tools, Server Extensions appears to be running,
but there is nothing I can configure.

Can anyone help?

With thanks in advance

B

Think it's the way Network connections on Win 98 / XP work
- the timeout is because WinXP first has to open the Network Connection (check for any scheduled tasks on win 98) and then finally
open the web thru the network

Try opening Network Connections and browsing to the Win98 before you open FP
- should cause all that overhead to be over

IMHO - upgrade the Win 98 to Win XP

Thanks, Stefan, for the tip - but it didn't make any
difference. Think it must be to do with the XP disk based
web not being a "server". Presume I need some kind of
Personal Web Server, but can't find out what, or how to
configure.... Will keep looking

Think it's more related to NFTS permissions / sharing on Win XP vs Win 98

I have no problems opening a Network Disc Based Webs on machines running Win XP

I would like to be able to edit the disk based website

When I try to open the website from the Win 98 machine it
says "server timed out".

You have a "file share" server, not a "web server" server. You have to
browse across the LAN to edit from the 98 box to the XP box. (You will have
to share the folder on the XP box first.) The server timed out because
there isnt one, you did not set it up.
When I look at the website on the XP machine it says that
a server is not running and I cannot set any security
permissions as they are greyed out.

Either set the server up, or use the LAN method. (Note, I think I remember
some sort of restriction against editing across a LAN on IIS for
Workstation, like, can't be done. You may need to use PWS on the 98 box and
leave the web there to edit with a real server.)
In Admin Tools, Server Extensions appears to be running,
but there is nothing I can configure.

Can anyone help?

It sounds like you have an IIS problem. Try asking in the IIS groups. Can
you get to http://localhost/ on the XP box? If not, the server is not
running. (Despite what the Server Extensions thing says, it probably says
you have it installed, not running.)

Many thanks for the email. Appreciate your help.

<<You have a "file share" server, not a "web server"

The folder is shared. I can browse from 98 to XP and open
the files in a web browser OK, but I cannot open them in
FrontPage. Guess this is to do with the server setup (or
lack of one!).

Not sure how to set the server up. 98 does have a PWS but
it seems like a backward step to have to go back to 98
for the two boxes to both be able to edit the same
website. If I can make it work, I would like to use the
XP as the "storage" place for the disk based version of
the web as it is with all the other related work files.

Cannot see http://localhost/- so I guess you've hit on
the problem. Will ask in IIS.

THANKS a million for the advice

Thanks, again, for the advice.

I will check the permissions and see if that helps.
Fingers crossed.

Logically it should all work. Must be doing something
wrong somewhere. Do you run IIS on XP?

Thanks

Yes on occasion, but I also just run DBW

Make sure you set up the folders as shares
(I have a partition W: with just a series of DBW in it and set the drive W as a share)

If you are using IIS, then you need to access the webs via http://servername
or http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1 not via the file system.
