FP2000 HTML file copy paste edit problem.

P

Perplexed

I would like to copy a file to another directory under my
web and edit it while leaving the originating file as-
is. For example, select index.html under the main web
directory and then select 'copy'. Go to the
directory 'XYZ' and select 'paste'. The file is pasted;
however, when I edit the copied file, the originating
file is also changed. Why does copy/paste/edit work that
way and how can I make it work as expected?

Thanks

Once you paste the file and open the new copy, changing
the copy shouldn't change the original.

It it possible, however, that you're changing the content
of a Shared Border? Because when you change a Shared
Border in any page, FrontPage makes the same change to
every other page that uses Shared Borders. That's
the "sharing" part of Shared Borders.

I don't think that the folder is shared - how could I
tell. The folder is located on my Apache server and I
haven't set up any file system shares. Does FP2000 have
some other way to set up a shared folder within itself?
I've seen shared borders (hidden under _borders) and
shared templates (.tem) but nothing on shared folders. I
know that the '_' typically makes a folder 'hidden' to FP
are there other things that one can do?

Perplexed:
To accomplish this, I normally open the original and do a "save as" and save
a copy to the new location, and then edit the copy. What happens when you
try that?

The point I was trying to make is that the original
source file is changed - not just the final web image
file one sees after publishing when using a shared
border. This could only happen if I was editing a file in
the shared '_borders' folder(for example, left, right, top
or bottom.htm).

Personally, I don't know the details of how FP2000 is
handling other files in the _borders folder - are they
shared too? Since the file was not in _borders folder
that discussion probably isn't germain anyway.

The observed behavior would make you think that a
file 'link' to the originating file was created during
the copy/paste step rather than a physical copy of the
file. I'll take a closer look for additional information
and post it later.

Do you have a web open (File Menu | Open Web) in FP when doing the copy/paste between folder within
the web?
