FP2003 -Redesigned by Developer

Anthony Smith

Good Morning Everyone,

I hope everyone is doing GREAT this Friday Morning. We have a website,
www.peconet.com, that was designed several years ago using Frontpage. This
website is a technical resource for a lot of products the company sells. We
asked a web developer to give us a fresh new look. The content is staying
the same, just a makeover. Well the web designer is just about finished and
I'm wondering the best way to switch to the new design site. The web
designer is using Macromedia Dreamweaver.
He wants to just upload it to our ISP, the problem is I don't know what will
happen the next time I go into FrontPage and click update. I will be
maintaining the site making various changes, this developer was just giving
us a fresh new look. So can anyone tell me the best way to make the switch.
Should I download it from the developer and copy it over my existing
frontpage site and then publish it to the ISP? Our ISP is Interland that
hosts our site. We're running FP2003 and do not have a copy of DreamWeaver.
I'm not sure how FP will handle a site that was designed in another
application. Please advise.

Thanks!

Sincerely,
Anthony Smith

Depending on the features used by the Dreamweaver developer, you could in
fact have some issues when using FP.

There were no major work done, just a new look and feel. I'd be comfortable
saying it's just a new theme so to speak. No flash or anything like that
used. I'm wondering if FP has some type of import feature for Dreamweaver.
Thanks for the reply.

Again, it all depends on what proprietary features used by the author.

You can use the import feature in FP.

I suggest you use the Import feature in FP, and see what you end up
with (make sure you don't overwrite your current site!). My experience
is that if the Dreamweaver HTML used is "vanilla," you'll be 99% OK,
and if there are any problems, they are likely easy to fix.
If your developer had no issues getting your original FP site into
Dreamweaver, you shouldn't have much trouble going back.

If your current site used any FP components, such as forms, etc, they will not work in the new site,
unless the site is publish via FP's http mode to server that has the FP extensions.

Good Morning Everyone,

Why didn't you use a fp developer?
Why did the developer accept the job knowing you could not work with it
without more advice?
He's duty bound not mess up your site, talk to him/her and ask what will
happen, if he's worth his money he will know what can and can't be done,
explain that him overwriting the current site and causing problems is not
something your going to be paying for, you paid for a makeover but you also
paid for a working site. If he was chump enough to accept the job without
knowing how to do this, it's his problem, I hope you have not paid him yet.

Next time pick someone who works in the same editor the webmaster of the
company works in and the editor the company owns.

I'd be interested to see what he's come up with.

Tina

Thanks for all the replies. I'm getting a copy of the new website on a CD
and I'm going to try to import it into Frontpage 2003 and see how that
works. There's not a lot of glitz and glamour to it, so hopefully we won't
have much of a problem.

Have a blessed day!

Don't import it!

Copy the content of the CD to folder on your HD, then open that folder in Windows Explorer, and
select all content/folder, then right click, properties and remove the read-only attributes, then
close Windows Explorer and open FP and browse to this folder and allow FP to make it a web/site.
Then you can work on your site content.

Make sure that you always open site in FP via File Menu | Open Site before you work on your site
content
