FP98 will not recognize new files

V

vicki

I have posted this so many times at so many newsgroups
including this one- i am hoping this will be a concise and
complete discription of this mess that has developed over
time.
1. I have a new Compaq computer with WinXP.
2. about 6 months ago I purchase another computer for my
home loaded the program-loaded my other website with no
problems. WinXP
3. What I initally wanted to do, on my Compaq, was to load
FP98 and back load my site from the web and get things
going. It refused to do this. So I tried to back load from
a dif computer and load it from the e:. It refused. I
tried to just load one file copied from my old computer.
It refused. I tried to open a new website and start from
stratch. It refused.
4. What it wants to do, regardles of what I ask of it, is
to go to a location it decided was some boogus internet
location htt://shop-WOGTXLD67 upon the installation of the
program. When installed It says that it is searching for
and IP addy and instead of coming up with ATT, it has
gotten one of its own. So every time I ask it to do
something such as create or open a file it says it is
going to this adress and then an error messsage appears
saying that FP has found no host name shop-WOGTXLD67 or
that it timed out. So it runs in s circle.
5. I have tried to unistall and reinstall.
6.I thought maybe I needed to install the internet
explorer of ths disk even tho it is definately older than
the one I have installed on the computer. It set an error'
You must have NT SUR 4.0 gold (version 1381)to install'.
7. ARGGGGGG!!!
It has to be something very small that I need to adjust in
this particular computer for this to work but I have no
idea what. I have searched all the setting(have not
changed any) in case something would jump out at me.

If both machine are running Windows XP Home, then installing FP98 with default settings, installs
the Personal Web Server which is not supported under Windows XP, actually no MS Web server is
supported under Windows XP Home.

This shop-WOGTXLD67 , sound like it is the name of the computer which FP tries to assign to the web
server., so this is why you see FP trying to connect to: http://shop-WOGTXLD67

You need to complete un-install FP98 and the PWS, then install FP using a custom install and not
selecting the PWS or the FP extensions.

Then you will have work with FP98 with disk-based webs, which FP98 is not designed to do very well,
as it was designed to work with server-based webs.

The best option is to upgrade to FP2003 or check eBay for FP2000 or FP2002.

Because XP can't handle the PWS.
If you do the custom install as Thomas suggested you should be able to
publish just fine.

You need to follow my suggestions or FP98 will never work correctly on your local machine.
