I believe if you hold down the shift key while drawing, it constrains the lines to 15 degree increments. 3 x 15 = 45 so you can do 45s as well.

Pressing Shift doesn't seem to have any effect on freeform drawing in 2007 the way it did in 2003. (Grrr.) I'd keep PPT 2003 around for drawing shapes where this ability is needed.
