freeze up

In Office XP, Word 2002 SP3:

Occasionally the program freezes up. The cursor may or may
not continue to blink. The mouse cursor moves, and, when
moved over a menu bar selection, the selection responds,
but when the mouse is clicked, the menu does not drop down.
ESC does nothing.

Control-Alt-Delete elicits the dialog box that
includes "Task Manager" button.

Sometimes clicking the Task Manager button brings up the
list of programs: all always indicate "running."
"Escape" brings me back to the document, which now behaves
normally.

Sometimes the Task Manager button does not respond.
The "Cancel" button also does not respond.
"Escape" brings me back to the document, which now behaves
normally.

Sometimes the Task Manager button does not respond.
The "Cancel" button also does not respond.
"Escape" does not do anything. If I wait a while, maybe a
minute or two, the dialog box that includes the "Task
Manager" button goes away, and the document behaves
normally.

If you have Norton AV running, disable the Office Plug-In.

Thanks, Charles.

Done. Good try. I think it may be freezing up less
often -- or else I'm getting used to it as SOP. Aaagh.

Any other ideas?
