Freezes on exiting

When I attempt to exit "Word" upon completion of a task,
either by going to the dropdown menu and clicking
on "Exit" or clicking the "X" at the top righthand corner,
the program takes me to a screen that says "Normal-
Microsoft Word" at the top of the screen and then the
program freezes. The only way to get out is to either
close the program through the Ctrl-Alt-Del function (which
sometimes doesn't solve problem) or by hitting the reset
button on the computer. What do I do to fix this?
