Freezes. Updates and Upgrades?

I have Microsoft Office 2000 on my XP. A little over a
year ago, my Word stopped working (if I try to open it, it
freezes, and sends an error report). But I was leaving for
a study abroad and didn't have time to deal with it. Now
that I am back, I am trying to fix the problem. I am now
given the message that there is an update available (there
was not before): http://oca.microsoft.com/en/Response.asp?
SID=604 However, when I try to update the program, it
requires the installation CD. I don't have this CD either
(a) because the product came with the computer or (b) My
family has moved twice in the last year and have misplaces
quite a few things. I've tried to order the update through
the mail, but it still requires the original installation
CD.

Does anyone know of anything I can do without buying the
whole thing all over again? I have basically resolved that
I need to purchase the product again, but if I have to do
that, I was hoping I could just buy the upgrade.
SO does anyone know if the upgrade will work even though
my current Word has this problem?

Ok I found the VERY helpful link in another post and was
able to open Word without add-ins, but when I go to the
Startup folder, there are no *.dot files and I have set it
to show hidden files also. I am looking at the other
options, but so far, no luck.

I followed the link in a previous post:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm
And followed the steps, none of which worked. However,
when I was checking out corruptions to the registry keys,
I went under Office and instead of X.X(version) and then
Word, I just went under Word and then Addins. One of these
keys was corrupted, so I deleted it and all is well.
Thanks to whoever left the link there!
