freezes when select message in Inbox pane

Outlook 2003
reading pane is open
I start the application and then once it opens I click on Inbox from the
Favorite Folders. I then click on a message to select it in the INbox pane
and Outlook 2003 freezes.

Occurs randomly. I have nothing but IE running while testing this problem
and on separate occasions it did freeze and it didn't. Then I had Excel and
Autocad open while testing Outlook and it did not freeze as I have described.

I use CTRL+ALT+DEL (task manager) to "end program now" and I notice that
there are 2 instances of Outlook 2003 running. There should not be because I
have NOT opened it twice.

What should I do to stop Outlook 2003 from freezing? I already updated
Office. I also ran the detect and repair tool. Should I try all of the
things that Iezban listed below? But they didn't work for him so then what
should I do? Thank you for any help you can give.

Hi Becky,

Are you working with a POP3/IMAP or Microsoft Exchange account? If
Microsoft Exchange, is the profile configured for "cached mode"?

couple of thoughts...

1) make sure the person names smart tag option is unchecked. (see tools >
options > other)

2) if you notice the lag/freeze more often with plain text vs. html
messages, try disabling the remove extra line breaks in plain text messages
(see tools > options > prefs tab > email options button. checkbox is in top
half of dialog)

3) exclude *.PST file types from any type of real-time antivirus scanner

I did all of things you suggested below but they did not solve the problem.
When I closed Outlook, even though it had closed, a message immediately
appeared and informed me that it had enountered an error and needs to close.
So I chose to send an error report. When I clicked on the link to see how to
avoid the problem in the future it mentioned that Symantec had caused the
problem.

So what I did do that has seemed to solve the problem is uninstall Symantec
Winfax Pro 10. Seems it was the problem all along. I appreciate your input.
Thank you for your time.
