Frequent crash and excel not responding to key strokes

Has anyone else encountered this problem? I'm running Excel 2004 on an Intel core 2 duo MacBook pro running OSX 10.5.8. During almost any session of Excel use, the program will stop responding to keystrokes - only by using task manager to switch away and then back to Excel can I get it to respond again. During this time, the mouse and menu commands continue to work.

At other times, often when deleting data from cells, Excel will crash dramatically, bringing down the entire computer and requiring a manual reboot.

Could there be an Excel file that is corrupted or something?

Please help!!!!
