Frequent login failures with multiple accounts

I have Entourage configured for two accounts: one Exchange and one IMAP. I constantly get "Login failure: unknown user name or bad password" errors on the IMAP account.

There's nothing wrong with the credentials because 1 out of every 20 tries, it actually connects and receives mail.

The IMAP account is gmail if it matters.

We rarely get complaints like this for gmail. See this article for setting
up gmail as IMAP to be sure you are setup correctly. Otherwise it sounds
like your connection is bad.

I've confirmed the configuration and credentials several times. I should mention that the problem occurs most frequently with Scheduled Send/Receive. Immediately after Scheduled Send/Receive fails, a manual Send/Receive almost always works.

Also, the problem occurs more frequently when I'm connected to my office VPN using either the Cisco VPN client for Mac or Snow Leopard's built-in Cisco VPN client.

Finally, I have the same configuration in Mail.App and it never fails -- ever.

So it seems like Entourage is maybe timing out too quickly only on Scheduled Send/Receive and displaying a misleading error message.

How often are you trying to connect? Every 2 min is not advised. I would
suggest every 10 min.

I get the same issue. I have entourage configured for 4 or 5 email accounts.
It often gets confused and if I hit the send/receive button I get the same
error. But if I click on one of the other accounts in the left window, then
go back, it will start a new send receive on its own with no errors. This
appears to be a bug in entourage.

Well, 2 minutes is not even an option but I did have it set to 5. I've changed it to the next increment (15) and so far, it seems to be working.

However, that's really not an acceptable work-around -- in my job, 15 minutes is a *long* time to wait and expecting Entourage to correctly handle a 5 minute poll period is not an unreasonable expectation IMHO.

That makes sense. VPN servers may or may not allow "split tunneling".

Split tunneling means that while you're connected to your company via
VPN that you're also allowed to continue using your personal Internet
connection for other activity outside your company network.

Many companies deny split tunneling because it can be a security risk.
You're then required to use their Internet connection while on their
network. Consult with your IT department and ask what they support.

Hope this helps!

Not only does my IT department support split tunneling, they strongly encourage it.

I appreciate all of the responses and they make complete sense, but everyone seems to be ignoring the key characteristics of my issue:

1. Scheduled send/receive does not *always* fail to connect to gmail. It just fails most of the time *if* I have the frequency set to 5 minutes and my VPN is connected.

2. Scheduled send/receive also fails to connect to gmail most of the time if I have the frequency set to 5 minutes and my VPN is *not* connected. The only difference is whether it fails 95% of the time or ~50% of the time.

3. If the scheduled send/receive frequency is set to 15 minutes, the gmail connection always works independent of whether I'm connected to the VPN.

4. Manual send/receive also works reliably independent of whether I'm connected to the VPN.

gmail connection always works independent of whether I'm connected to
the VPN.

Gmail's IMAP supports the IDLE command. You don't need to enable your
IMAP account for a scheduled Send & Receive. As soon as you receive mail
at the Gmail server then you'll receive it in Entourage regardless of
the schedule.

Hope this helps!
