Freze Panes Won't Save

W

Will Simmons

Running Excel 98 under OS 9.2.2 on a Power Mac beige G3 with 352 MB
Built-in memory. I use freeze panes to make my column Titles show no matter
where I am in the worksheet. Unfortunately, the freeze disappears every
time I close the worksheet and hence must be re-done on each launch.

I've studied the Custom Views help, but it appears to be of no help Ñ or
perhaps I just don't understand it. And, as far as my Googling shows, this
newsgroup's articles on "Freeze Panes' have not discussed my problem.
(Because everyone else knows how to avoid it ?)

TIA for any suggestions, ideas (or just commiserations, so I know I'm not
alone).

The only time I've ever seen this is when I've saved the file as a
workspace rather than a workbook. See

In Googling the MSKB, I also found this reference to losing frozen
panes if the file is saved as a Lotus file:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;176635

Thanks for the references, but, both of your cites are the same (the Lotus
file issue). However, a quick search of the Knowledge base produced the
Workspace article. See
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;192871>
"Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 192871, XL98: Window Options Are Not
Saved in Workspace File."

Its says, among other things I didn't know:
Workspace files save the workbooks you have open, including their size,
arrangement, and position on the screen. When you open a workspace file,
all of your workbooks appear with the same settings they had when you
closed them. However, when you save a workspace file, the Automatic Page
Breaks (or Page Breaks), Formulas, Gridlines, Color, Row & Column Headers,
Outline Symbols, or Zero Values options are not saved. When you open a
workspace file, all the workbooks are displayed with the default settings
listed above.
Additionally, split, frozen, or zoomed panes on a worksheet are not always
saved in a workspace file.

So, as usual, you hit the nail smack on the head.
