Front Page 2003 Publishing Problems

S

Snip

I have Front Page 2003 and I cannot get my web page I made published. I
followed the directions but ran into a big problem. First off, I cannot
access the "Publish Site" option under the "File" menu and I cannot access
the "Remote Web Site" option under the "View" menu. Both of these options
are greyed out. Is something wrong with my Front Page or do I have something
set up wrong.

Why can't I access these options? I have everything set up with the ISP - I
just can't get Front Page to cooperate.....

Do you actually have a web site created, or just a page?

I'm not sure on the terminology here but I did set up a web page at the ISP
which is comcast. I don't know how I did it but I did get the "Publish" and
the "Remote" options to show up but now I have this problem. When I click on
the "Publish Site" option I do get the "Remote Web Site" option and I enter
what comcast said to do which is "https://home.comcast.net/user name. What I
get when I do that is this message "A web site does not exist at
http://home.comcast.net/user name. Would you like Front Page to create a web
site at that location?" I enter yes and then this message comes back "There
is no web named "/"." What's up with that and what does it mean?

I can't figure our how to get this to work - it is so frustrating. I did
find a tab that showed summary reports so I clicked on it to see the broken
links and there were 127 - I don't understand this because when I view it in
the browser option everything links to where it should. I need help as you
can see - this is not as easy as people say it is......

Thanks

First you have to create a web/site on your local machine, not just a
"loose" web page. There are other files that FP creates in association with
a web/site.

Once you do that the Publish function under File will be available.

Then you will Publish via http to your comcast web/site at whatever address
comcast gave you to publish to.

It's not as hard as it seems except sometimes when you're using a free
website server or some webs that ISP's provide.

The above method assumes your web space has FrontPage extensions installed
and working.

Hi Rob,

Could you please elaborate on how to create a web/site on one's local machine?

I am using FP (2003) for the first time and want to transfer a single html
document to my web site. However, in the View menu the option "Remote Web
Site" is grayed out (as are some of the other options as well).

Thank you for your trouble.

To create an empty web:

Open FrontPage
File->New
On the task pane that opens on the right, click on More Web site templates
Choose Empty Web, and click the Browse button.
Browse to where you want the website - I suggest c:/myweb, use the create
folder button in the dialogue toolbar to create a new folder.
If the folder is not open in the dialogue, Select the folder
Click Open
Click OK

FrontPAge will craeate and open the new web.
File->Import your page and any other associated files (images etc.)
Rename the page to the name required by your host for a home page (usually
index.html or default.htm)

You start by using File New Web/Site
Then File import and existing page(s) files / folders
