No I cannot browse to this file.
http://www.abc.com/image.jpg was chosen at random as an
example of the form of the images that caused Front Page
to abruptly close. When Front Page was in this mode,
every web page that I tried to open that contained an
image from the web caused Front Page to close. I did try
to open at least one of the offending images in IE. It
did open in IE.

Front Page has now snapped out of the abrupt-close mode,
after I created a new web page, added an image from the
web to it, and saving the file. All the pages containing
images from the web that I previously tried to edit now
open fine.

Unfortunately Front Page has gotten back into the abrupt-
close mode a couple times in the past after snapping out
of it for a while. If the procedure in the above
paragraph works every time, I at least have found a weird
work-around.

Have you tried the usual repairs in the sequence below:
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and/or %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) In Windows Explorer Find and delete the file hidden file CMDUI.PRF
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\State
4) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
5) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
6) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
7) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
