I have just bought a PC with Windows XP Home - would it be safe/sensible to
install FrontPage 2000 until such time as I can afford an upgrade to latest
edition?

Yes - there is no problem running FP2000 on Windows XP Home. Note that XP
Home does not support any Microsoft web server, so you are restricted to
disc based webs

Thank you, Sir. Could I trouble you to explain just a little bit what
"restricted to disc based webs" means in practice. My need is simply to
maintain a personal website hosted by what used to be wanadoo (now Orange).
Previously I constructed this with FrontPage (on a Windows 98 system) and
used an FTP program to upload it to the webspace. As long as I can continue
to do that I'd be happy.

A disc based web is stored on a file system, whereas a server based web is
stored on a web server. In a disc based web dynamic parts (server side
scripts, etc.) cannot be tested. For a web as you described, this should
not
be a problem. You can use either FrontPage or an FTP client to upload the
web.
