FrontPage 2003 Resets my computer.

B

Barbara

Front Page 2003 locks ups and resets my whole computer. I have a friend IN
NJ with the same problem. I got the program to quit trying to open a file
but it still resets at times.

What are you trying to do when this happens??

Have your tried the usual "clean up" routine:

Close FrontPage and Internet Explorer.
Using Windows Search, search for files named *.web ( with the asterisk ) and delete all found.
Then search for and delete files named *.tmp
Then clear the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet, History and Cookie files.
Reopen FrontPage and see if it's back to normal.

What do you mean exactly by "Reset your whole computer"?

Actually, It drove me so crazy that I have done a complete restore this
morning and a fresh install of Front Page. It is still happening. One thing
at first was it trying to open my last page. I have turned that option off
but it still does it when I am trying to do something else. Last time was
when I tried to open my normal web page, and it loaded the main part but
locked up on trying to open the shared borders.

Wes

You think it might be a virus or something in her OS?
A restore would only reload anything that was there to begin with.

B

Barbara

Nope, Ran a virus scan before I restored. I did a FACTORY restore not a back
up restore. So unless it came with the virus when I bought the computer,
That would not be it. Good thought but I thought of it already to.

W

Wes

Yes, but does the factory restore also format the drive to erase everything
or just overwrite the OS and whatever goodies that came with the machine?
Could also be a spyware or adware causing some conflicts.

Sound like you are opening pages first and not a Site first. Always use File Menu | Open Site before
working on the content of your site.

Nope, No Virus either. I checked that first. Also remember that I had this
problem from the time I got the computer new.

W

Wes

You never mentioned that the problem came with the machine. If your friend
has the same problem with the same machine, I suggest you contact the store
where you purchased it, its likely flawed. How long have you had it?

B

Barbara

I have had this one a few months, I bought it at office depot here in Texas,
because it was cheaper than building another when my last got hit by
lightening. My friend has had her Dell for about 3 years. She started
having problems with hers a few weeks ago. Both of us are extrememly
Computer literate and have been puzzled.

With every new PC that I have bought, I start by formatting the hard drive
and re-installing from scratch. This avoids dealing with all the OEM crap
that places like Office Depot and Staples squirt onto the machine. Dell is
much better, but still has a bunch of useless junk running.

You mention that your friend's problem started a few weeks ago. This leads
me to believe that one of you has infected the other with something nasty.

Nope. We have both checked that. Both computers are virus free. She
formatted hers a couple of weeks ago and even did fdisk/mbr and continues to
have the same problem.

I really do appreciate all the efforts. I was hoping that someone else here
would have had a simalar problem and was able to repair it.

Uninstall and then reboot twice and then reinstall. Then run an
antivirus program to scan your hard drive. It will cure your
problem.

Ditto, thats why I assemble my own from scratch or barebones.

Since both PSs are reacting in the same manner, sounds like the *infection*
passed between them, prob in an email.

you mean the VAC...Value Added Crap :)
Yes, like the 2347 different variations on Solitare that I can't figure out
how to play.

Although, I've always really appreciated the mouse icon in the taskbar since
I'm always adjusting my mouse settings.

in message Bob..you mean the VAC...Value Added Crap :)
I do the same thing...cant stand all the junk they put on pre-builts.

Turn off the automatic restart after System failure (you may get a FP crash but not a system restart)
- right click My Computer - Properties - Advanced - System Failure
(turn on write event & send report)
Check your PC (as restored) has all the MS Office, IE and OS SP /patches installed
- go to Office Updates and Windows Update (see 3 & 4 below)
Also verify you have the latest version of directX and video driver for your PC installed
- FP is heavily dependent on IE, and video issues
You may also have a bad memory chip (try finding a memory chip tester)

After each failure make sure you do a cleanup ( 1 & 2 below)
If it persists after a failure:
- look in your temp files for wecerr.txt and FrontPG.log for clues to the error
- on Windows XP check the Event Viewer for errors (right click My Computer - Manage)
- Open FP and Run - Start - All Programs - Microsoft Office - Office Tools - Microsoft Office Application Recovery (look any error
reports before they are sent)

Steps for cleanup and
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
4) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
5) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
6) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
