FrontPage 98 and Windows XP Pro

T

Tom Pepper Willett

Yes and no.

FP 98 comes with and requires either the FP web server or MS Pws, which is
installed by default.

WinXP Pro comes with IIS 5.1 as the web server, and you can't run the FP web
servers.

So, you would need to do a custom install of FP 98 so that the FP web
servers don't get installed.

Tom,

I have the same question and need a little more insight from you. I did a custom install of FP 98 on my new WIN XP Pro system and did not install the web server that came with FP 98. However, do I need to install something else? I tried to import my existing web and I keep getting the message that there is no server on Port 80. All I want to do is use FP 98 to build/maintain the pages and then will upload them to web server using a different program like ws_ftp. As it is now, the no server on port 80 message prevents me from even doing that. I appreciate any additional suggestions. Tnx.

1. On your Windows XP Pro, you should not have installed the PWS or MWS, since you have IIS
installed, hopefully that was just a typo in your post.

2. If you set a restore point, you can roll back to the way your system prior to installing the
update if necessary.

3. On Windows XP Home, no MS web server application is supported, so FP98 would have work with
disk-based web, which it wasn't really designed to do.

A disk-based web is one that is access via the file system (c:\..) where as a server-based web is
accessed via http://.

There is no workaround under Windows XP home for using a server-based web with FP extensions.

Thank you for that info. I want to make sure I understand correctly.

I can use FP98 on a windows xp home version machine, but I will be developing disk-based webs. Disk-based web means that all my pages will reside on my computer at home and since no FP server based support is offered, I will have to FTP each of my pages to the host server? I will do a custom install of FP98 on the win xp home machine and not load any of the server software options PWS or MWS. Have I got it correctly? Thanks again.

Not having FP server extensions on your local machine has nothing to do with
the host server having FP server extensions.

If your remote web has FP server extensions, you will http publish, not ftp.

That should work, but keep in mind that FP98 was designed to be used with a local web server.

My remote server does not have FP extensions.

So I guess my question still is can I use win xp home version with FP98 to create disk based webs
(and disk based webs are ones where all the pages are created on my local hard drive)? If yes, then
I will upload to the remote server using FTP. See any problems with this method? Thanks for the
quick reply.

Not having FP server extensions on your local machine has nothing to do with
the host server having FP server extensions.

If your remote web has FP server extensions, you will http publish, not ftp.

Thank you for that info. I want to make sure I understand correctly.

I can use FP98 on a windows xp home version machine, but I will be
developing disk-based webs. Disk-based web means that all my pages will
reside on my computer at home and since no FP server based support is
offered, I will have to FTP each of my pages to the host server? I will do
a custom install of FP98 on the win xp home machine and not load any of the
server software options PWS or MWS. Have I got it correctly? Thanks
again.
:

A disk-based web is one that is access via the file system (c:\..) where as a server-based web is
accessed via http://.

There is no workaround under Windows XP home for using a server-based web with FP extensions.

To respond to you below:

1. Yes that was a typo :) I did not install the PWS or MWS.

2. I will give that restore point option some consideration! Thanks for the reminder about that
feature.

3. I am not familiar with disk-based webs. So I am not really sure if that means this other
person wouldn't be able to work around this in some way. Any further advice?

Thanks for taking the time to work with me on this.
:

Here's what I ended up doing and it seems to work (ie: i can udpate my web site).

I first installed the IIS windows compenent of Add/Remove programs.

Second, I did a custom install of FP98 with the PWS or MWS.

Third, I found my web, renamed it, had to for some reason.
Fourth, edited various pages as a
test
and uploaded them to my web site using WS_FTP Pro trial version. Viola it worked.

Questions: Now that it works, I get messages that critical
updates are available for the IIS
and
one of them says if I install it that this can't be undone. I don't really know what these will
do
so I could use some guidance because I don't want to mess up something that's working!

Second, question: is it possible to do a similar load of FP98 on a win XP machine running the
home
version? My back up web site person has the home version. What tweaks would be necessary in
order
to get that working? I don't think the home version has IIS for some reason. Please advise!

:

In Windows Control Panel Add Remove Programs (Windows
Components) add IIS, then install and

| Tom,
|
| I have the same question and need a little more insight from you. I did a custom install
of
FP 98 on my new WIN XP Pro system and
did not install the web server that came with FP 98. However, do I need to install
something
else? I tried to import my existing
web and I keep getting the message that there is no server on Port 80. All I want to do is
use
FP 98 to build/maintain the pages
and then will upload them to web server using a different program like ws_ftp. As it is
now,
the no server on port 80 message
prevents me from even doing that. I appreciate any additional suggestions. Tnx.
