Frontpage Client Open Site Error

T

Tom Loyd

I have looked qiute a bit over the internet and haven't found an error
that quite exactly mirrors what is happening for me. Please provide
me any suggestions for this, it will be greatly appreciated.

Here is what is happening:
I am trying to log into one of my remote websites that has Frontpage
Server Extensions installed and activated on it (Server is a Windows
2000 server with IIS 6.0). I click on the following in My Frontpage
2003 (this has also happened when I had Frontpage 2002 too):
File >> Open Site
and get the dialog box that comes up. I select the option for My
Network Places. I then type in my URL for the website at the bottom
in the Site Name text box using the following:
http://www.zweihigh.org
for the website. After that the NT User login and Password dialog box
comes up. I type in my username and password and then click OK so
that it will send the information to the server so I can log in.
After about a minute or so the NT User login and Password dialog box
comes back up again, except that this time the damn thing now has the
following in the Username text box:
www.zweihigh.org\zweihigh.org_fp15
and I cannot get rid of the www.zweihigh.org\ part of it. Even when I
delete it out and resubmit the information it keeps coming back. why?
This has happened a couple of times for me with different websites
that I have and I don't know why. What is the resolution to this?
Thanks for any help on this.
Tom

I'd bet $50 you're (or your host) is using a HELM control panel!

I've recently started using one on a couple of sites. This weird thing with
the helm(or so I'm surmising) sometimes has added these oddball user names
to my messenger/ passport log in list!

Are you able to re-type your user name and password and get in or are you
unable to get into the site.

I would either go in through the Helm (if you're using it) and re-set the
FrontPage password. then try to log-in and hope for the best.

Chris,
Yes, I am using the Helm Control panel with my current web service
provider. However, I have even gotten this error with another web
service provider who doesn't use Helm. The problem is the exact same
thing. So, it isn't Helm, it is something in Frontpage. I am almost
to the point of getting rid of Frontpage completely and just going
with Dreamweaver. This problem has come up more than once, and it
doesn't have anything to do with Helm, it is somewhere in Frontpage,
and short of hacking this program to the exteme (of which I am not
capable) I am at a loss for a solution. I have been all over the net
and haven't found a solution to the problem. Any further suggestions?
Thanks,
Tom

Have you contacted either host regarding the problem, as it is the host system that generate the
login dialog?

Not sure what your actual issue is, since the your original post content has been removed from the
replies.

Also which version of FP are you working with, the version of the extensions installed on the
server, the server OSs that you are having the problem with, etc. will help other to help you.

nah, I'm still thinking it's helm. who knows, maybe the other guys are
using helm on their side to make the administration easier and just not
telling you about it.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. ;-)

Thomas, Chris,
The original post is down below. Now, on to your issues. The reason
why I don't believe it is the Helm control software is because I have
websites that are on the same server that work with Frontpage server
extensions and just one or two that don't. On those websites that do
work, I can login normally through Frontpage without any problems and
it works excellent. However, on the one below and one other site, I
still get the same error as listed below in my original comment. That
is what is so frustrating about it. Especially since the only place
where the issue shows is in the Frontpage on the client side. Do you
all have any suggestion. Here is the information:
FP Version: 2003
Server (Host): 2000 & 2003
Server Extensions Versions: 2002
Hosts:
1) www.readyhosting.com
2) www.reyox.net
It is occuring with both hosts only for one website each. Appreciate
any help with this.

Tom,

If you have sites on the same host/server that you can access without problems with your FP client
application, then it can not be your FP client application, it has to be the configuration of the
specific sites that are generating the errors on the server.

A web site is completely independent of any other web site running on a server

The extensions are applied and configured for each site independent of other web sites on the
server.

Permissions for a site are independent of any other site on the server.

If it was your FP client application, you would have problems connecting to any of your FP sites.

Thomas,
Thanks, I have an trouble ticket in with my Web Host Provider to look
into the problem. When I get a resolution for it I will post here
what the results were and how they fixed it. Thanks for you help on
this.

Tom,
Please post back as I'm getting the repeating log-in names as well.

I checked both the KB and forum (the forum is pretty good, too) but didn't
find anything about the problem there.

TIA

Ok, I finally got my websites up and running. The Webhost had to
manually remove the frontpage server extensions for the respective
sites that had this issue. I then went back the Helm control panel
and reloaded the Frontpage server extensions and then logged back on
through my Frontpage client without any issues. My stuff is working
now. My Host said that it was a rather sticky problem, but the
long-short of it was that they had to manually uninstall the server
extensions. Hope this helps someone out. I am going to eventually
post this up on one of my websites for people to find and unscrew
their problems. Thanks for you help everybody.

Great!
I'm going to keep this in mind. I've been having the problem but for myself
it's not worth taking proactive steps, for a client it'd be different.

I wonder why I couldn't find reference at helm's site? I think I'll either
contact them or have the host contact them on it.

thanks again for posting back with your findings.

Chris,
I just checked out your website. Pretty interesting, are you actually
using .NET yet or are you just using the name for pages? I am curious
since I just finished a couple of months ago with the whole MCSD
training for .NET, but haven't taken the tests yet. Pretty
interesting and wierd, because I do a lot of the same things that you
do along with a lot of multimedia stuff too (video and music).
Anyways, hope you get your stuff fixed too.
