FrontPage conflicts with other software?

K

Kelly Smith

Are there any known software conflicts with other
software packages that might keep FrontPage from
functioning properly when attempting to publish pages
using http?

Hi Kelly. I've run FrontPage on a number of PCs with a wide variety of
different kinds of software for years and have never had a problem. What is
the exact problem you're having?

Hi Kelly.....

I know that I learned very quickly that you need to publish a fp web through
fp itself. When I tried to do it with ftp it "broke" the fp extensions on
the server and they had to be reset. I'm not sure if this is also the case
with http but I am guessing that it is.

Best to you.....

Kelly,

I have used FP since the 98 release and never had any
issues.

I did have a problem when I installed the Sygate Pro
Firewall, although it was not a software issue. I had
mistakenly blocked FrontPage from accessing the server
(Not very smart on my part).

I also read a post from Stefan Rusynko (MVP) and Steve
Easton regarding Yahoo messenger and issues with port 80.

Hope it helps,
JDR

Yahoo IM interferes with FrontPage publishing
as it uses port 80 for it's P2P file sharing utility.
FrontPage needs port 80 to publish via http://

If you have Yahoo installed make sure it is shut down.

Strange, I have Yahoo on the machine I use for FP and both work fine. I
don't use the file sharing component though.

If you have disabled the file sharing utility, then port 80
is not used by Yahoo.

Most people don't know how or simply don't disable it,
and it is on by default after install.

When I try to publish my site using http, through
Frontpage, I get a message saying that there is no web at
that location and asking if I'd like to create one. If I
say OK, it either returns me to the "Enter Publish
Destination" box or tells me that a web cannot be created
at that location and gives some possible reasons, one of
which is the server extensions might not be installed.
This happens on two separate remote servers, both of
which tell me the problem must be on my end since all of
there features appear to be set right and functioning.
Usually when I have a problem, it is related to Norton
Internet Security but even turning it off before
publishing hasn't helped. I was wondering if something
else might be causing a conflict. If you have any
suggestions, please let me know!

Are you publishing locally to your live site? If so the problem may be on
your ISP's end. make sure they have the site set up with the server
extensions installed.

Hi Tom...

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying completely.
I was trying to publish through Frontpage... when I
select "Publish Web" the 'enter publish destination' box
appears. It was my understanding that if you wanted to
publish so that the Frontpage extensions work, you use
the prefix http:// and the site name... to FTP (and
corrupt the FP extensions) you would use the ftp://
prefix... is that not right? is there another way to
publish through Frontpage?

Hi David,

I'm not sure exactly what you mean... locally? live site?
you mean on my own computer? I'm not sure how to do
that...

Yes, through Norton Internet Security... I've tried
disabling it before publishing but it didn't help... I
was wondering if there might be a conflict that would
necessitate me uninstalling NIS?

By locally I mean from your PC and by "live" I mean the site on your ISPs
server. In order for you to be able to publish to a site on your ISPs
server the site has to already exist (unless you have admin privileges or
are creating a sub web)

David, thanks for bearing with me... I have a personal
home page set up through my ISP (roadrunner) and I have a
domain (www.sparkyenterprises.com) set up through a
remote host. I can publish to both sites using the FTP
method through Frontpage, but I'd like to use some FP
components which won't work unless I transfer through
HTTP (that is correct isn't it?) and that's where I'm
having my problem. Neither host has been much help in
solving the problem. Roadrunner concluded that the
problem must be with Frontpage, which I've reinstalled
with the same results and the other host can't even
understand my problem.

Thanks for trying to help!

David, I can't thank you enough for trying to help me
sort this out!

Starting from the top:
I go into Frontpage and open my web.
From "File" I select "Publish Web" and a box pops up that
says "Enter Publish Destination"
I enter "http://www.sparkyenterprises.com" (to attempt
publishing to the host server)
or "http://home.midsouth.rr.com/sparkyenterprise" (to
attempt publishing to my personal homepage)

I get a message saying that a web does not exist at that
location and asking if I'd like Frontpage to create one.
I click "OK" and in the first instance, I receive a
message saying that a web cannot be created at that
location and listing 4 possible reasons. In the second
example, I get returned to the "Enter Publish
Destination" box.

I have tried working through the Troubleshooting steps
for Frontpage found at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;324843

The first two tests work fine. When I attempt Test 3,
enter the server name, and click 'open', I get a box that
says "connecting to server" then a box that says "The
folder 'http://home.midsouth.rr.com/sparkyenterprise'
isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an
unavailable location, protected with a password or the
filename contains a / or\"

It says to try doing the same thing with the IP address
but I don't know the IP address to try that. I'm also not
sure what the proxy server settings should be in order to
tell if they are correct.

If you can help me solve this problem, I will be
eternally greatful. If it's easier to contact me through
email, my email address is [email protected]

Thanks again!
Kelly

Hi Kelly. Ok, your steps are right. There must be a problem on your ISP's
end. You need to contact them with the steps you outlined below and have
them look into it.
