Frontpage displaying URLs with %

D

David Berry

Remove any spaces from your file and folder names. That's what's causing
it.

Don't use spaces in file names.
Replace them with dashes - or underscores _

How can I stop Frontpage from displaying my page URLs with 20%, instead of
just www.xxxx.com/page??
Thanks

Hi Denise

You would need to rename your files for example red20%widget.htm should be
changed to red-widget.htm

When you make a file and leave a space FrontPage will automatically insert
the 20% to denote there is a space.

For seo purposes using a dash for the space is the best rather than a
underscore _

There is a Free FrontPage addon that can get rid of the spaces in your file
names throughout your site automatically, however it just closes the gap. So
your red20%widget.htm becomes redwidget.htm for seo purposes this is no good
as redwidget becomes one keyword not two.

If you are going to rename a page merely by getting rid of the 20% and
changing it for a dash, it still means it's a complete change of file name
to the search engine's so you need to use a 301 redirect for your older
files to the newer files ... (make sure the content is not duplicated by
leaving content on your old file names) This is best solution if you can't
manage that using a redirect meta tag on the old file is something you can
do at the very least. - Make sure if your using a navigation view that you
take out the old file and put in the new and that after all your changes you
recalculate hyperlinks under Tools as well.

Since you have to rename file names, it's a good time to think more about
the seo content of the file names. file names title h1 tag and content
should all reflect each other.
For more on seo check out this free seo class at:

Let me know if this helps

Jimco addon *space replacer* doesn't merely remove spaces, it replaces them
with an underscore. Makes no difference whether it's an underscore or a
dash.

Actually yes it does .. very minor but used with other 100 plus seo
techniques it's all part of the overall optimisation, If you test google you
realise that the se does not 'see' the underscore and so red_widget.htm
becomes redwidget.htm which is one keyword while it does 'see' the dash, and
so red-widget.htm is two keywords.

I'll leave you with your opinion however.

I didn't realise the addon left underscore's. Thanks for the knowledge.

Are you saying that the underscore is not seen by the Google index? If that
were the case, only a few of my pages would be indexed.
redcross, red-cross, red_cross all produced Red Cross results. red_cross
also produced a Red_Cross result as well. (did not try red-widget) ;<)
Am I missing something here?

Wes, we must be missing something as I use filenames like 1.asp, 10004.asp, CoveHaven.asp and have
no problems or issues with being indexed by the major search engines.

The site that I use 1.asp on has 14,000 plus pages index by Google. The title, description and
keywords are generated from the database to match the actual page content.
